It’s a story with simple - but well known - beginnings. It started with Jane and Glenn McGrath’s very public experience with breast cancer, and has become one of Australia’s most recognised and respected charities, the McGrath Foundation. Some years after her initial diagnosis, Jane’s cancer returned and during her treatment she had a breast care nurse, who both empowered and comforted her and the entire family. This experience set the mission for the Foundation.
In addition to helping ensure optimal care for patients, providing continuing professional development opportunities for all McGrath Breast Care Nurses is an essential part of the Foundation’s nurse strategy. The geographic spread of the Nurses in communities’ right across Australia presents challenges for supporting them with ongoing face-to-face education, particularly for topics where research and resulting treatments are continually evolving. The Foundation had already developed an eLearning strategy and implemented an open-source Learning Management System but required help with generating interactive and engaging content.
Peopleplan was engaged by the McGrath Foundation to develop a series of interactive online learning modules and videos covering topics from Introduction to The McGrath Foundation to Metastatic Breast Cancer. We worked very closely with key stakeholders at the Foundation including a number of nursing experts and McGrath Breast Care Nurses who have day-to-day experience in the field. We were happy to work within the parameters of their existing technology as our instructional designers and content developers are able to deliver content that is suitable for any LMS.
According to Jane Mahony, Mission Programmes Director at the McGrath Foundation, the introduction of its on-line education platform has been very successful. “Peopleplan have interpreted the information we’ve shared with them extremely well and delivered dynamic modules that meet our requirements and our expectations,” she said. “Over and above generating very engaging content, they have been very helpful with some trouble-shooting and user engagement issues that have arisen even though we are not using their platform to deliver the content."
